At the Antonio Gala school, aware of the global importance of environmental care and concerned about the lack of responsibility and sensitivity towards nature and animals, they decided to take action: to raise awareness among the school’s families about the presence of the bee-eater, a bird that nests in vulnerable places in the city park, in order to prevent them from destroying their breeding areas.
To this end, they have carried out the following activities:
- Visit to the city park of La Corchuela.
- Carrying out multiple readings.
- Research on biodiversity and care of ecosystems and their importance at a global level.
- Creation of posters and infographics.
- Creation of a video for families and schools.
A hundred of first and second graders have involved in this project. The evaluations carried out with teachers and pupils show the following results: pupils have learnt content related to the subjects of Language and Natural Sciences and are now more aware of the importance of caring for nature and especially for birds such as the bee-eater. In addition, students have shown a higher level of development in values such as: creativity, collaboration and relationship with other people.
The leading teacher says:
“During the project we could see that the pupils developed an attitude of curiosity about the environment around them. At the same time, they were interested in the object of the Service-Learning project carried out, they investigated on their own and brought extra information from home”
