This Service Learning project involved a second-year class of students from the "Manzoni" school in the Golosine district. The project centered on public green spaces as clean and culturally vibrant community areas. The primary issue identified was the difficulty in living some parks by the citizens due to neglect, insecurity, and a lack of cultural promotion.
The students engaged in a "high digitization" process that consisted of several phases. Beginning with the reading of a book on land usage, students were motivated to appreciate the importance of caring for the planet and being active citizens. After an initial phase of study, they participated in activities involving the analysis and monitoring of green areas through data collection, photographic documentation, and neighborhood interviews. Golosine was explored using Google Earth to identify parks and their locations, with the information mapped out on a class map. All materials were compiled on a dedicated website, managed by the students.
The students identified four actions they could take to improve the park next to the school for the benefit of children and the community: building a birdhouse, promoting bookcrossing, cleaning the park, and planting flowers.
The commitment will continue into the next year, but on June 5, 2024, a celebratory event welcomed parents, teachers, and students from other classes to illustrate their journey. At various stations curated by the students using headsets, books, and digital tools, the community had the opportunity to explore their interdisciplinary work and dedication to caring for the planet.
